Taking the KL Monorail

By Ca Toh of Malaysian Explorer

One of the best ways to see Kuala Lumpur or KL is using the KL Monorail. It operates from 6:00 AM till 12:00 AM (midnight).

The KL Monorail has 11 stops from end to end, passing through many attractions in Kuala Lumpur. From the Titiwangsa, which is in the suburbs of Kuala Lumpur to the other end, the KL Sentral, takes only 40 minutes.

The cost for riding the monorail from end to end is only RM2.50 or roughly US$0.80 per way. The minimum charge is RM1.00.

It is fully air conditioned. One of the great advantages of taking the monorail as a tourist is that it offers you a great view now available on any other transport. I is high enough to look down and into many interesting places of interest.

Among the major places of interest which is covered by the KL Monorail are

1. Titiwangsa area - The Mall, Putra World Trade Center, Titiwangsa Lake;

2. Chow Kit - famous for the Little Indonesia image;

3. Bukit Bintang - the main tourist belt of Kuala Lumpur with it's street malls, exclusive shopping centers;

4. Petronas Towers and KLCC;

5. Old Pudu Prison built by the British in 1905;

6. Chinatown or Petaling Street;

7. Brickfirlds or Little India of Kuala Lumpur;

8. KL Sentral - the new transportation hub for Kuala Lumpur.

Please note that Kuala Lumpur, just like many other cities of the world, has many pick pockets. Many of them operate at the various stations, particularly the busier one. They do have many modus-operandi and their approach may be different from what you know of back home.

It is best to avoid using the monorail during rush hours. Rush hours are usually from 7:30 AM to 9:30 AM when people go to work. And from 4:30 PM to 7:00 PM when they return home.

Hope you have a pleasant ride on the KL monorail. And don't forget to post a comment here, ok? ;)
